Dental Implant Basics
What the parts do
An implant fixture is placed in the jaw. A connector can join it to a replacement crown. Implants can also support some bridges or dentures.
How to compare options
Ask how an implant, a bridge, or a removable replacement would fit your situation. Each option has different surgery, maintenance, and follow-up requirements.
Understand the whole restoration
Ask which part of the plan concerns the fixture and which part concerns the visible replacement. A discussion of the fixture alone leaves out decisions about the shape, support, and care of the replacement teeth. Ask whether the proposed restoration replaces one tooth or several and how you would clean around it.
Compare the plans by stage
Separate examination, surgery, healing checks, and restoration when you review a proposal. Ask which steps are included in the estimate and which depend on later findings. If you are considering a bridge or removable replacement, compare maintenance and follow-up as well as the initial procedure.
