Root Canal Treatment Basics
Why it is considered
A root canal procedure can help preserve a tooth when the pulp inside it is inflamed or infected.
What happens afterward
The clinician cleans and seals the canals. The tooth then needs a suitable final restoration, which may be a crown depending on the tooth.
Understand what is being treated
The pulp is soft tissue inside the tooth. A dentist may consider root canal treatment when this tissue is inflamed or infected and the tooth can be restored. Ask what the examination showed and whether the remaining tooth structure affects the plan.
Plan for the final restoration
Ask how the tooth will be protected between visits if treatment takes more than one appointment. Confirm who will place the final restoration and when. Before leaving, ask how to care for the tooth in the meantime and whom to contact if symptoms change.
